This is the Tourond family clock that was in the possession of Arthur Tourond (1883–1948) and his daughter Margaret Tourond-Townson. This clock has been in the possession of the Tourond family since at least the 1870s and was originally owned by family matriarch Josephte Paul Tourond (c.1831–1928) and her husband Joseph Tourond (1826 –1883). It was hidden by the family while Canadian soldiers were looting and destroying Métis property in the Batoche area during the 1885 Resistance. The clock measures 20.25 inches (52.43 cm) in length and 10.75 inches (27.3 cm) in width. It was made by the E.N. Welch Manufacturing Company, an American company specializing in mantel clocks. A Victorian era “Sharp Gothic” mantel clock, it is mahogany with a mahogany veneer and a peaked case, which is flanked by turned finials, a gilded glazed door, and a face with Roman numerals. |
